Recitals and Practices

Apart from the prescribed daily Wird and weekly Ratib of the Tariqah, there are many other supererogatory recitals and practices adopted by the Murids.

These include:

  • Invocations [adhkar]
  • Orisons [ahzab]
  • Litanies [awrad]
  • Supplications [ad'iyya]
  • Works [waza'if]
  • Devotional odes [qasa'id]
  • Prayers upon the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace [salawat 'ala-n Nabi]

and other voluntary acts of worship derived from:

  1. the Holy Koran
    [al-qur'an al-karim]
  2. the Prophetic Example
    [al-sunnah al-sharifah]
  3. the Practices of the Pious Predecessors and Gnostics
    [al-salaf al-salihin wa-l 'arifin]

Some of these require the explicit permission [Ijaza] of the Shaikh, who grants it upon request or when he deems fit.

Voluntary Acts of Worship ['ibâdât]

…My servant does not come closer to Me with anything more dear to Me than that which I made obligatory upon him. My servant keeps coming closer to Me with more voluntary deeds, until I love him. When I love him, I become his ear by which he hears, his eyes by which he sees, his hand by which he holds, and his foot by which he walks. If he asks Me any thing I shall give him. If he seeks My protection I shall grant him My protection… (Al-Bukhari: 6021)
